About the Role

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT (OCA). Applicants will be referred to the Hiring Manager every Monday starting 9/21/2026 or until all positions are filled or until the announcement closes on 10/09/2026. The San Diego VA Medical Center is seeking a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing). This position is a full-performance level position in Sterile Processing Service and is under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, Sterile Processing Service.

What You'll Do

  • The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) GS-06, will work as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices.
  • The supervisor and/or Service Chief will assign work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations.
  • The supervisor evaluates completed work for overall technical soundness and conformance to agency policies through competency assessment utilizing simulation, direct observation and verbal responses from the incumbent.
  • Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: The incumbent will provide sterilization, preparation, supply items and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the medical center.
  • The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position.
  • The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position.
  • The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position.
  • The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient.
  • Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time, Varies, Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm or Monday-Friday, 3:30pm-12:00am or Monday-Friday, 12:00am-8:00am Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Requirements
