What You'll Do

  • This position is located in the National Gallery of Art's Maintenance Department of Facilities Management.
  • The Mason is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all interior and exterior marble, stonework, and other masonry at the National Gallery of Art and Sculpture Garden facilities.
  • Duties for this position include: Matching new masonry with existing masonry and finishes to exacting standards.
  • Working on lifts, scaffolding, and ladders which the incumbent helps to set up and remove as necessary.
  • Performing other masonry functions such as fastening marble or stonework veneer to the face of a structure using tie wire or anchor holes.
  • Cutting, shaping, and finishing various kinds of stone and marble.
  • Following plans, instructions, and directions in setting up material, and equipment for assigned work or specialized projects.
  • Sorting stone by size and shape and lays stone according to masonry principles to obtain strength and a lasting appearance.
  • Using masonry tools, materials, and related equipment properly and safely.
  • Fabricating and installing items in assigned portions of exhibition spaces and areas of the permanent collection.
  • Utilizing a specialized array of cleaning agents to clean marble and stonework.
  • Cleaning around works of art, when working in the galleries and other public spaces.
  • Exercising care and extra precaution in performing work near any works of art in order to avoid damage.
  • Choosing approved chemicals and equipment that will not damage any art in the area where performing work.
