About the Role

This position serves as the maintenance supervisor who is under the general supervision of the Chief, Maintenance & Repair. This foreman supervises employees of the Mechanical, Structural, and Architectural Section of Facilities Management Service at the Portland Division of the Portland VA Health Care System.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include, but are not limited to; Reviews major utility systems and associated equipment to assure compliance with regulations.
  • Provides planning, submission, and implementation of the maintenance program.
  • Supports and enforces policies, procedures, standards, and goals in Facilities Management.
  • Ensures all priority E, H & A work requests are completed in a timely, accurate, and coordinated manner.
  • Services requiring an E or H work order are contacted, as appropriate, so that little or no criticism is received as a result of lack of preparation, non-responsiveness or failure to accurately reflect Medical Center program priorities.
  • For assigned work areas, maintains accurate, current, and complete job files and the as-built for any system/structure modifications.
  • Conducts all performance evaluations and resulting actions on subordinates within established guidelines and timeframes set forth in current VA policy, union contract and direction of Administrative Officer.
  • Notifies Chief, M&R in a timely manner of critical, sensitive, or otherwise appropriate issues with effective recommendations for problem resolution.
  • For assigned work areas and section personnel, assures compliance of the policies and procedures of the Medical Center, Union agreement, Uniform building codes, etc., as applicable.
  • Establishes priorities to effectively allocate financial, equipment, and human resources in a manner which demonstrates commitment to quality health care delivery, improved productivity, technological advances and cost containment.
  • Develops and/or implements new initiatives in an effort to enhance the efficiency of maintenance and operations, including training of staff.
  • Establishes performance standards by date required, updates positions descriptions and participates in the selection of new permanent M&R employees.
  • For recurring reports (monthly, bi-annual, annual, etc.) analyzes, prepares, and submits documentation for assigned reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Supervisor documents that within 30 days of appointment, all new subordinates have completed a review of the appropriate OSHA, Medical Center, and Facilities Management Service safety standards for their position.

  • In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
