About the Role

The Licensed Practical Nurse (Mental Health) and provides safe, timely and individualized nursing care to patients in the Mental Health Care setting. He/she is able to interact and collaborate effectively with patients, families, other health care and supportive personnel. He/she can initiate appropriate actions based on his/her observations of the patient's condition.

What You'll Do

  • The Licensed Practical Nurse (Mental Health) assists the registered nurse with the care of patients with acute and rapidly changing physical and/or emotional needs.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) and meeting of qualifications as noted below is required.
  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Demonstrates knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
  • Provides effective education to patients and/or family members in relation to common disease processes, medication, and/or prescribed treatment regimes Develops and maintains therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families/significant others.
  • Attends treatment team meetings and collaborates with treatment team to modify the Veteran's treatment plans as clinically indicated.
  • Documents nursing plan of care in Mental Health Suite.
  • Responsible for maintaining PMDB training and utilizing PMDB principles and techniques when necessary.
  • Administers and monitors for effectiveness and reactions to psychotropic medications and other prescribed medications.
  • Complies with BCMA and medication administration policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes the need to notify the RN/Provider based on observations of the patient's physical and mental health needs. - Initiates appropriate practical nursing care based on observations of the patient's physical and mental health needs. - Determines the immediate need for intervention and notifies the RN accordingly.
  • Promotes mental health by implementing practical nursing care for behavioral problems, psychiatric disorders and co-occurring conditions to promote health and safety, symptom management.
  • Benefits Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
  • Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
  • Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
