About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • This position is assigned to the Pathology & Laboratory Service at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland -Atlanta VA Health Care System, located in Decatur, Georgia.
  • The incumbent serves as a Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS).
  • He/she may act as a liaison tot he supervisor and other departments/ divisions of the medical center for the appropriate laboratory specialty.
  • The Lead CLS is responsible for all aspects of operation in their area of specialty, including assignment of work responsibilities, workload management, and completion of assignments for staff at or above the full performance level as well as preparation and maintenance of records and reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, and compliance.
  • Evaluates quality control protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.
  • Performs validation/method verification studies for new systems.
  • Ensures that laboratory tests and procedures are consistent with accrediting agencies standards and requirements.
  • Consults with healthcare providers on logical protocol to follow in attempting to confirm the diagnosis of risk assessment of a patient.
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and / or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids using established procedures.
  • Maintains records of test and examinations and final results for all record functions and inquiries related to patient care.
  • Troubleshoots instruments and resolves technical problems whenever possible, document corrective action, and reports problems to all supervisors.
  • Assists in instructing students and laboratory personnel in the principles and techniques of diagnostic test and examinations.
  • Provides advisory services to technicians, technologist, and other specialist relative to higher knowledge acquired thru continuing education and work experience.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
