About the Role

This position is located within the Environmental Management Services of Pittsburgh VA Medical Center. The position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services. Work is performed by hand with light and heavy powered cleaning equipment. The certificate will be utilized until it expires for any and all upcoming vacancies. The cut off dates to issue certificates will be 5/29/2026 and 6/12/2026.

What You'll Do

  • The housekeeping aids who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S.
  • Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
  • A VA healthcare career as a housekeeping aide means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff.
  • As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties.
  • Veterans rely on the skills of these professionals to keep patient areas clean and safe by addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, vacuuming and polishing floors.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to: Cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture.
  • Empty trash, waste baskets and replaces liners.
  • Clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings.
  • Performed work by hand and with light and heavy powered (industrial type) cleaning equipment.
  • Moves and arranges furniture, patient wardrobes, beds, etc. in the assigned area to accomplish cleaning tasks.
  • Replenishes supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers and soap in all areas where dispensers are located.
  • Clean and replace needle boxes.
  • The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
