About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Serve as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for more markedly difficult, complex, unique, and/or emerging tests requiring special knowledge in the fields of Chemistry, Miscellaneous Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Immunology, coagulation, serology, and specially Protein Electrophoresis testing.
  • Conduct studies and recommend changes to correct deficiencies and improve the Core Lab work area.
  • Validate new/replacement instrumentation.
  • Design work flow to accomplish objectives in the Core Lab work area.
  • Advise all organizational levels on various aspects of the specialized testing, including the appropriateness of specific tests and takes into consideration the clinical context and usefulness of the test information.
  • Advise on alternate testing to overcome ambiguities in the clinical diagnoses.
  • Identify training needs appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed.
  • Identify, define, and resolve issues associated with complex aspects of data or unique or controversial aspects of the testing where no direct precedent exists.
  • Analyze emerging trends and technology and adopt appropriate methods and testing.
  • Apply laws, policies, precedents, regulatory, licensing, and accrediting requirements to establish, monitor, and maintain the specialized testing.
  • Maintain process control in a specialty area through a multifaceted quality assurance program.
  • Reviews and evaluates quality control data looking for shifts and trends.
  • Utilizes standard deviation and coefficients of variation to determine the acceptability of quality control results.
  • Determines appropriate corrective action to resolve quality control issues.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
