About the Role

The Chief of Staff (COS) is a member of the executive leadership team which functions as the decision-making body for the overall administration and oversight of the health system. The COS works with the other executive leaders in the formulation, supervision, and integration of clinical activities inherent in the clinical services, education, and research of the Lexington VA Health Care System (LVAHCS).

  • The Chief of Staff is a board-certified physician in a clinical specialty (Internal Medicine/Family Medicine, etc.) with clinical experience and demonstrable administrative and leadership skills.
  • The COS develops and maintains currently accepted management practices throughout the clinical services.
  • The COS develops and presents the budgetary requirements of the clinical services and assists in the formulation of the annual budget program.
  • The COS is fully responsible to the Medical Center Director for programs of patient care and for the educational and research activities of the clinical services.
  • Practice is of an executive nature, comprised of complex leadership and administrative components, associated with critical heath care issues and activities that influence the organizational mission, health care policy and delivery, and overall strategic direction of the facility.
  • The Chief of Staff is the senior executive within the health system and is a key member of the executive leadership team.
  • As such, the COS is involved in strategic planning, organizational assessment, and program development.
  • The Chief of Staff has the authority and responsibility for establishing and maintaining standards of medical practice and ensuring the continuous and timely availability of quality medical services.
  • The incumbent is the chief spokesperson for the organized medical staff and is the catalyst for the integration and collaboration of the medical staff with other professional disciplines and functional areas in the mutual achievement of organizational goals.
  • The COS also ensures VA's missions of education and research are conducted effectively.
  • Participates with the health system's governing councils, management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the health system's decision-making structures and processes reporting directly to the Director.
  • Chairs the Medical Executive Board, Health Care Delivery Council and Peer Review Committee.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
