About the Role
This position is located in the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services, Financial Management Group (FMG). As a Accountant, GS-0510-13, you will serve as a senior accountant, providing authoritative and comprehensive technical expertise for accounting work that requires the application of complex accounting principles, theories, concepts, and practices on a range of financial reporting.
What You'll Do
- →Serve as an expert providing professional accounting services to the assigned area and to other financial managers regarding the accounting function and the application of accounting principles, policies, and procedures.
- →Determine corrective action necessary to resolve complex operational problem conditions.
- →Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates incoming source documents, identifies discrepancies and their sources, and prescribes corrective action.
- →Review a variety of complex incoming, outgoing, and summary financial reports to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of financial operations and financial reports.
- →Serve as the point of contact for the Group or Division translating accounting/audit language for universal understanding. with management and operating officials.
- →Monitor complex accounting operations compliance with established internal controls to identify problem areas, determine actions required to improve operating program effectiveness, ensure and maintain financial integrity.
Requirements
- ✓Education Requirement: In addition to meeting the qualification requirements, all candidates must have the following educational requirements: A.
- ✓Degree: accounting; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting.
- ✓The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law.
- ✓(The term "accounting" means "accounting and/or auditing" in this standard.
- ✓Similarly, "accountant" should be interpreted, generally, as "accountant and/or auditor.")--TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION.
- ✓Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in accounting, or an equivalent combination of accounting experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional accounting knowledge.
- ✓The applicant's background must also include one of the following:1.
- ✓Twenty-four semester hours in accounting or auditing courses of appropriate type and quality.
- ✓This can include up to 6 hours of business law--TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION;2.
- ✓A certificate as Certified Public Accountant or a Certified Internal Auditor, obtained through written examination--CERTIFICATE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION; or3.
- ✓If you are applying for a position for which a state license is issued (e.g., physician, engineer, attorney), possession of a valid and current U.S. professional license by a graduate of a foreign professional school or program is sufficient proof that the foreign education has been determined to be equivalent to the requisite U.S. professional education in that occupational field.
