NIST's Fire Research Division is seeking an Environmental Engineer to conduct cutting-edge research in the area of fire smoke production. This role will develop and apply experimental methods to measure smoke properties and their chemical composition, assess smoke transport and dispersion, and evaluate their impact on environmental exposure and visibility. This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
What You'll Do
- →NIST's Fire Research Division leads efforts to advance the science and practice of fire safety engineering, firefighting, fire investigation, fire testing, fire data management, and controlled burning.
- →Within this division, the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Group conducts research to reduce fire hazards in WUI communities.
- →Their research includes mission-related measurement science research and services to develop WUI fire risk exposure metrics, predict fire spread in WUI communities, assess the fire performance of structures and communities, and mitigate the effects of WUI fires on structures and communities through science-based codes and standards.
- →As a Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Smoke Research Engineer, you will: Develop, implement, and evaluate smoke characterization measurements Assess the impact of fire smoke and mitigation actions Communicate Research for effective technology transfer
