About the Role

The Transportation Assistant - Fleet Manager is located in the VA Western Colorado Health Care System in Grand Junction, CO. The primary duties and responsibilities of the Fleet Manager are to coordinate data submitted by various services within all divisions for fleet services. The fleet vehicles are VA purchased, leased, and donated vehicles for use by all Services within the facility.

What You'll Do

  • ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Coordinates vehicle requirements, training VA employees, planning, budgeting and maintaining consistency in fleet services.
  • Monitors the fleet and communicates agency and local policies and priorities to all employees using vehicles and equipment within the fleet.
  • Orders VA License Plates from the VA's website.
  • Orders replacement and new vehicles in accordance with fleet management requirements for usage, mileage and other factors.
  • Communicates in person, by phone, fax, email, letter or memo.
  • Analyzes all vehicle use including mileage, number of trips, days used, number of passengers and always make sure the fleet is right sized and maintained within the VA GSA standards to optimize maximum efficiency.
  • Maintains tracking of all vehicle histories from the time of purchase/donation to six (6) years past the turn-in or salvage/auction of each vehicle or piece of equipment (per credit card regulations).
  • Takes pictures, follows-up with drivers, track accident reports and repairs as well as all maintenance tracking.
  • Works closely with the VA Police & Security.
  • Manages and operates a complex fleet of motor vehicles ranging the passenger vehicles to heavy trucks, buses, para-transit vehicles and special purpose vehicles to support all combined activities and components of Federal agencies within an assigned geographical area.
  • Coordinates all maintenance requirements and direct service station operations for the area.
  • Is responsible for overseeing major and nonstandard vehicle modifications and repairs and/or recommendations for uneconomical repair determinations.
  • Acts as the back up for timekeeping in the event the primary timekeeper is off location and becomes the primary timekeeper when the Engineering Program Support Assistant position is vacant until it is filled.
  • Utilizes computer systems and software (Excel, Word, Power Point, Access, Outlook, GSA Databases, CRASH, Mileage Express, etc.) to successfully perform all of the duties of this position.

  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 Physical Requirements: Most of the Incumbents duties are sedentary in nature with the occasional walking, climbing, stooping, bending and reaching as required.
  • Travel is required for inspection of maintenance and repair work, accident investigation, visiting customer agencies, and any additional training for Fleet Services.
