About the Role

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY METEOROLOGIST in the FLEET WEATHER CENTER NORFOLK WITHIN THE OPEATIONS DEPARTMENT (N3) of NAVAVNFCSTCEN.

What You'll Do

  • You will provide authoritative meteorological and oceanographic guidance that directly impacts the safety and mission success of U.S. and Allied Forces.
  • You will lead efforts to develop and implement advanced weather output and toolkit.
  • You will analyze climate and ensemble models for long-range strategic planning.
  • You will integrate data to support global Department of Defense aviation and maritime initiatives, including providing optimal ship routing and destructive weather warnings.
  • You will provide direct supervision and professional development activities.
  • You will lead and conduct advanced research focusing on weather phenomena, atmospheric modeling, and the integration of meteorological data.
  • You will advise senior leadership, government agencies, and stakeholders on meteorological trends and their implications for operations.
  • You will represent the command in meetings, conferences, and working groups related to meteorology and atmospheric sciences.
  • You will deliver lectures and briefings on all aspects of marine weather forecasting, optimum track ship routing, aviation weather forecasting, and resource protection to groups.
  • You will serve as a meteorological advisor to Commanding Officers and Masters of vessels engaged in sustained military operations or long-haul transits in the world’s oceans.
  • You will assist in meteorological and oceanographic training of 100+ active duty and civilian personnel assigned to the Operations Department.

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Meteorology Series, 1340: A.
  • Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale) Three semester hours of physical meteorology.
  • Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  • Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.
  • Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.
  • Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.
  • Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. *TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PROVIDED*
