This position is part of the 147 ATKW at Ellington AFB, Houston, TX. The incumbent of this position serves as the Deputy Fire Chief responsible for the overall management and supervision of the fire protection/crash rescue and fire prevention program for the base. Texas is one of 9 states with NO state income tax.
What You'll Do
- →As a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER with the Texas National Guard, your duties will include, but will not be limited to: As Deputy Fire Chief, participates in all aspects of the administration and planning of a comprehensive fire prevention, firefighting, and rescue program at the installation.
- →Responsible for overall direction of the activities of the training, technical services, and operations programs and operation of the communications center.
- →Reviews plans, schedules, and other management activities of subordinate assistant chiefs, ensuring that all programs are fully functional and operating at maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
- →As necessary, reassigns employees to balance manning of subordinate programs and otherwise ensures that all programs are manned to accomplish the mission.
- →Serves as the on-scene commander of a fire/crash scene until relieved by the Fire Chief.
- →Determines the best course of action to minimize loss or damage from fires or explosions.
- →Directs the placement of firefighting equipment and personnel to ensure maximum utilization in fire control or aircraft crash/rescue operations.
- →Assesses the fire scene/emergency situation to facilitate fire/rescue operations and to brief the Fire Chief upon arrival.
- →Supervises safe and proper rescue operations of endangered persons.
- →Ensures rescue operations are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and minimize the risk of additional danger to firefighting personnel and endangered persons.
- →Determines adequacy of measures taken to minimize the loss or damage as a result of fire or explosions.
- →Responds to hazardous material incidents, and initiates actions to establish control of the affected area with minimal risk to response personnel and the environment.
- →Ensures that personnel are properly protected to handle hazardous material.
- →Assists the Fire Chief by representing the Fire Protection Flight at a variety of installation, local community, and functional area organizations and by participating in special projects and initiatives.
Requirements
- ✓Appointment Factor(s): This is a Title 5 Excepted Service position.
- ✓Area(s) of Consideration: Currently employed T32/T5 full-time Permanent, Indefinite and Temporary personnel of the Texas Air National Guard All current members of the National Guard, Reserves, or Active Duty and eligible for immediate transfer into the Texas Air National Guard.
- ✓US citizens, US nationals or individuals who owe allegiance to the United States Remarks: Trial period required (see remarks) This is a Non-Bargaining Unit position.
- ✓Direct deposit is mandatory.
- ✓Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance within one year of appointment.
- ✓Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness testing program.
- ✓Employee must meet medical standards IAW OPM GS-0081 Series and DoD Manual 6055.5.
- ✓Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
- ✓This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
- ✓The employee is subject to random drug testing.
- ✓Pre-employment drug testing and participation in random drug testing is a condition of employment.
- ✓Note: The caveat is that the states, territories, and the district cannot drug test until a drug free workplace policy has been established and approved by the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
- ✓Ability to implement firefighting/emergency response plans, as well as manage and direct fire suppression personnel and equipment under stressful and dangerous conditions.
- ✓Ability to plan, organize, direct functions, and to mentor, motivate, appraise, and supervise the staff of an organization.
