About the Role

This position is located at the Edward Hines Jr., VA Hospital, Hines, IL - a Level la Complexity VHA Facility, and is organizationally aligned under the Engineering Service, Maintenance Section. The incumbent serves as supervisor for the Facilities Maintenance Section which includes the facilities maintenance team and supporting staff and serves as a contracting officer representative level IT (COR) duties and for numerous recurring maintenance and repair contracts.

What You'll Do

  • Facility Maintenance and Minor Construction Provides oversight of facility maintenance, construction, & repair by troubleshooting deficiencies and coordinating for the corrective actions as required, as well as oversight of reoccurring preventive maintenance requirements.
  • Functions as a technical advisor to the Facility Engineer, planning and executing minor or routine engineering projects under the supervision of the Facility Engineer.
  • Additionally, the incumbent is a member of the space committee for space allocation and usage.
  • Works under limited supervision of the Facility Engineer on routine tasks and is able to analyze and troubleshoot facilities issues and recommend solutions to fix the issue to the General Engineer and direct the maintenance team.
  • Provides oversight of facility workers required to keep the building operational, to include maintenance mechanics, maintenance workers, carpenters, electricians, pipe fitters, contractors, and vendors.
  • Reviews diagrams and schematics for accuracy in design.
  • Uses as-builts to help troubleshoot and fix facilities issues.
  • Tracks the progress on contracted construction projects to ensure the project is designed correctly, built according to the design and/or the needs of the VA, and is maintainable.
  • Monitors construction/maintenance projects to resolve scheduling issues and to minimize the impact on VA employees within the facility.
  • Responsible for maintaining facility compliance with all applicable laws, codes and regulations as applied by various regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies, i.e., TJC, OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, CARP, etc.
  • Applies broad knowledge to review facility safety practices; to prepare and/or assist tenants and/or the general facility for accreditation visits, e.g., Annual Workplace Evaluation.
  • Coordinates the Facility Disaster Response Program.
  • Coordinates exercises and drills for all aspects of the disaster plans.
  • Facilities Administration Performs Administration oversight of tasks to include Budgeting, Property accountability, purchasing, and acts as a Contracting Officer Representative/Quality Assurance Specialist.
