About the Role

Serves as the Supervisory Engineering Technician and is located in the Durham VA Medical Center (VAMC), in Durham, North Carolina under the Facilities Management Service (FMS) within the electronics technician section and the engineering technician section. Reports to the Supervisory Health care Engineer (FMS Assistant Chief). The purpose is to oversee the technical and administrative work operations of subordinates.

What You'll Do

  • Duties & responsibilities include but are not limited to: Architectural design, mechanical and electrical design, fire sprinkler design, lighting design, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, ventilation design and asbestos abatement design.
  • Collaborate with service chiefs to prepare projects applications, conceptual plans, scope of work and construction documents, etc Prepare contract drawings and specifications for competitively bid construction and maintenance repair work at Durham VA.
  • Prepares drawings for outpatient clinic (OPC) level projects.
  • Responsible for comprehensive technical support of highly complex medical and non-medical direct patient care electronic systems and devices.
  • Typical devices or systems include, but are not limited to, intelligent nurse call and code blue systems, patient wandering systems, quad/paraplegic environmental controls, audio/visual systems, intrusion/security alarm systems, computer driven fire alarm systems, refrigerant temperature tracking, pharmacy robotic equipment,2-way radios, and surveillance closed circuit television systems.
  • Evaluates, identifies and provides corrective action and recommendations for equipment system malfunctions of complex microprocessor-based systems that utilize state of art technology and have vitally interrelated and sometimes dispersed subsystems.
  • Determines the training needs of the subordinates and arranges for the appropriate training.
  • Oversee and conduct new employee orientation and formal and on-the-job training concerning proper equipment use, work practices/procedures, safety procedures, and other varied topics affecting construction services.
  • Coordinates all work with normal hospital functions, prioritizes repairs and supports the Preventative Maintenance program to ensure avoidance of impact to patient care and critical operations.
  • Provides cost summary of Fiscal Year Budget to ensure continual operation of critical services and equipment are maintained.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
