This position is designated as a Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Clinical Pathology section of Birmingham VA Healthcare System, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise a full range supervisory responsibilities in planning, directing, and assessing work of subordinate staff in the point of Care Testing Laboratory Specialist.
What You'll Do
- →Functions & Scope of Duties: Demonstrates the ability to balance responsibilities and works with a great deal of autonomy in performing responsibilities that include, but are not limited, to recording and monitoring attendance; supervising and assigning work to employees; monitoring workload and clinical testing volumes; monitoring quality assurance and quality management; and labor relations.
- →Demonstrates the ability and skills to effectively supervise, direct, and manage a diverse staff; appropriately establishes priorities, delegates responsibilities, and assigns tasks accordingly.
- →Communicates priorities to staff for understanding and compliance with P&LM policies and procedures.
- →Ensures compliance accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements and establishes and monitors the quality of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes, initiating corrective actions as needed as part of the overall laboratory quality management program.
- →Develops, coordinates, and implements plans for providing training for subordinates.
- →Clearly communicates training expectations, and ensures completion of orientation, training, and competency assessments.
- →Performs competency assessments to address employee's capabilities and ensures competency assessments are performed according to standard operating procedures.
- →Serves the Laboratory Education Coordinator with developing curriculums for VA-STEP and HPSP programs participants, and recruitment materials, training materials, evaluation instruments, and other program materials.
- →Ensures staff understands organizational goals and mission for P&LM and BVAHCS.
- →Demonstrates knowledge of Human Resources policies and procedures, including recruitment, high performance development model, performance-based interviewing and hiring, performance monitors, performance appraisals, employee recognition and promotion, adverse actions, timekeeping and leave, etc.
- →Adheres to federal regulations regarding staffing practices and collaborates with HR throughout the staffing process and maintains effective labor relations management.
- →Demonstrates a working knowledge of EEO, harassment, ADR, and affirmative action and knows when to seek counsel regarding related issues; and is familiar with applicable union contracts and understands the grievance process and policies.
- →Clearly communicates performance expectations and conducts performance reviews/appraisal ratings in a timely fashion.
- →Provides mentoring, feedback, and coaching when needed; and recognition and or awards for high levels of performance.
