About the Role

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Training and Development, U.S. Border Patrol Academy located in Artesia, New Mexico. Additional selections may be made beyond the total number of vacancies specified using this vacancy announcement. Further selections may also be made for additional organizational divisions and/or units within the duty location(s) listed above.

What You'll Do

  • In this Supervisory Border Patrol Agent (Assistant Chief Patrol Agent) position you will be instrumental in strategically developing, administering, and overseeing comprehensive training programs and policies that equip CBP Managers with the essential tools and leadership capabilities.

  • This position starts at a salary of $129,258.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $168,040.00 (GS-14, Step 10).
  • Major duties: Serving as an Assistant Chief Patrol Agent at the Border Patrol Academy managing, planning and administering the development and delivery of basic and advanced training.
  • Participating in the development and evaluation of exercises, policies, procedures and techniques to manage and maintain effective training programs and communicating policies, procedures, and regulations to subordinate supervisors, instructors, and trainees, to ensure appropriate implementation.
  • Reviewing current policies to ensure relevance and effectiveness, creating and implementing new policies as necessary, creating, reviewing and analyzing training and budgetary requirements for basic and advanced programs.
  • Establishing guidelines and performance expectations; planning, organizing and directing work to include setting priorities and deadlines to accomplish training and organizational requirements; valuating performance, reviewing and approving leave, recommending disciplinary actions and advising on other administrative matters.
  • Representing the Agency or its components in meetings and negotiations with officials from other units, CBP, DHS and other federal, state and local agencies.

  • If you currently hold a grade level higher than the grade being announced, this action will result in a change to lower grade, and you may be returned at any time to the position held prior to this temporary assignment or to the same or similar position at the lower grade level.
  • Return to your original location will be prioritized, but is not guaranteed.

  • The USBP Rotation Program IOP dictates the terms of rotating out of the NTE assignment once the assignment has concluded.
