About the Role

Performs as a working supervisor in full charge of the Healthcare Technology Management Program at the Durham VA Healthcare Center; as such, has responsibility to maintain and implement the Medical Equipment Management Program that meets or exceeds current JOINT COMMISSION and NFPA requirements.

What You'll Do

  • Duties include, but are not limited to: Assisting with capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment spanning initial concept, installation, and effective implementation of complex medical equipment.
  • Manages a recall and safety alert program for medical devices, including medical device incident investigations to assure compliance with patient safety goals, Safe Medical Device Act (SMDA), and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements.
  • Conducts an equipment management program that meets current TJC and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements.
  • Advises clinical and administrative staff on medical engineering technology including existing and emerging technology addressing viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and/or safety while keeping abreast of changes in technology and utilizing information gained in the solution of biomedical engineering problems.
  • Acts as the subject matter expert in the field of biomedical engineering who directly supports specialized clinical technology including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance at a medical center.
  • Assist in establishing controls and procedures and monitors implementation to assure that all electronic devices and systems, and computers related to patient care equipment are utilized efficiently and safely.
  • Evaluates the patient safety features of electrical equipment and oversees the patient electrical safety program for the medical center.
  • Monitors the work of service contractors to assure that the work performance meets the needs of the medical center and conforms to the terms of the contract.
  • Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy.
  • Manages a recall and safety alert program for medical devices, including medical device incident investigations to assure compliance with patient safety goals, SMDA, and TJC requirements.
  • Assures provision of a continuing education program for professional staff addressing the principles and application of medical instrumentation used in the delivery of healthcare.
  • This includes a curriculum that addresses the safe and effective use of medical equipment and/or technology.
  • Serves as advisor to senior clinical and leadership staff on medical technology, including existing and emerging technology, addressing viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and/or safety.
  • Serves as technology advisor to assist VISN with technology management and assessment.
