About the Role
The incumbent serving as the Emergency Department Social Worker at the GS-11 grade, will be responsible for serving veterans in the Emergency Department in the Nursing and Social Work Case Management service line at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. The incumbent will provide direct patient care services throughout the continuum of care with the Emergency Department, inpatient medicine, and outpatient basis as clinically indicated.

- →Applies clinical judgement with screenings, assessments, safety planning, treatment planning, discharge planning, and care collaboration.
- →Provides patient care coverage to other programs and must be flexible with their tour of duty to ensure patient care coverage.
- →Possess a working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures, including acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses, substance abuse disorders, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.
- →Completes psychosocial assessments to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families.
- →Facilitates action for community placements through collaboration with Veterans and their families as well as interdisciplinary treatment team members to ensure that appropriate community placements are completed in a timely manner.
- →Implements treatment modalities and evidence-based practices as well as provide educational classes, and/or supportive groups for Veterans and families, including shared medical appointments.
- →Work Schedule: The position involves varying hours, including 8, 10 or 12-hour shifts, which will be discussed during the interview.
