About the Role

The Senior Social Worker works in the medical specialty clinic areas, including but not limited to, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery clinics.

What You'll Do

  • Duties Include, but are not limited to: The incumbent has advanced knowledge of, and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness.
  • Incumbent performs specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness.
  • Incumbent incorporates complex multiple causations in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.
  • The incumbent possesses highly advanced skills and expertise across multiple specialized intervention techniques and treatment modalities used in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery treatment programs.
  • The incumbent is also responsible for assisting with the coordination of pre- and post­surgical care needs, including arranging transportation, in-home support, securing lodging, and ensuring continuity of post-discharge support services.
  • Develops and implements methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery clinics utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services.
  • Offers consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery clinics rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills.
  • As a qualified supervisor, supervises Social Work graduate students and provides training experience for them in Social Work.
  • Works with students to develop training plans and goals.
  • Regularly assesses student's progress toward training goals and student's overall performance.
  • Provides reports to the school of social work field liaison on the student's progress.
  • The incumbent evaluates his/her practice on an on-going basis through participation in professional peer review, case conferences, research studies, or other organized means.
  • The incumbent makes rapid assessments and develops crisis management plans for admission to mental health inpatient programs.
  • In the event of an alleged abuse case, medical or psychiatric emergency, the medical center policy will be followed.
