About the Role

These Registered Nurse (Operating Room) positions are located in the Nursing service at the West Roxbury, MA location. These positions are full-time at 40 hours per week.

What You'll Do

  • The Registered Nurses (Operating Room) are accountable for patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care for the patient undergoing a surgical/ invasive procedure.
  • The perioperative Registered Nurses (Operating Room) plan, direct and coordinate the care of every patient undergoing operative and other invasive procedures, taking into consideration respect for the individual and recognition of the important contribution that each team member makes to the patient's well-being.
  • The Registered Nurses (Operating Room) are expected to function proficiently in both the circulator and scrub role within the Operating Room and to be competent in all surgical specialties served.
  • The Registered Nurses (Operating Room) maintain knowledge of current Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) Standards, VHA Directives, and service level standard operating procedures.
  • The Registered Nurses (Operating Room) assure the sterility of the surgical field is maintained and all instrumentation and equipment in play is used in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Independently plans and delivers technically competent care to patients with complex needs in alignment with the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
  • Manages the care of patients, while organizing and prioritizing patient care needs, and ensuring assigned tasks are completed.
  • Functions as an emerging leader in providing direction to staff to identify, implement and evaluate patient care needs.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure the plan of care is achieved.
  • Provides and directs others in Veteran/patient driven care that optimizes the patient's experience, satisfaction, and/or safety for a team of patients.
  • Maintains professional boundaries to protect patient vulnerabilities and act in the best interest of the patient.
  • Role models and displays ethical behavior.
  • Recognizes ethical issues related to professional nursing practice and models appropriate action by providing and directing others in the provision of care following established policies and ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Models' high reliability principles and I CARE values to improve patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.
