About the Role

Delivers a fundamental understanding of adult learning principles and a lifelong learner that can practice with flexibility to adapt or change learning strategies based on the assessment of learning needs within the healthcare organization. Functions as a formal and informal educator; serving as a liaison between internal and external customers.

What You'll Do

  • Major Duties: The Nurse Academics Coordinator/Nurse Educator is responsible for providing expert, evidence-based education to staff.
  • Provides educational instruction and training for nursing staff in clinical and outpatient units.
  • The Academics Coordinator understands instructional design, implementation, and application related to education and training.
  • Performs learning needs assessments, develops educational trainings for clinical staff within organization.
  • Assumes accountability for the implementation, coordination, and program development related to the support of scholarships and academic affiliations.
  • Responsible and accountable for the planning, organization, and evaluation of the effectiveness related to clinical, informatics, and/or administrative process changes, analyzing issues impeding change, developing corrective actions to expedite change, and assuring optimum utilization of available resources to maintain a climate conducive to quality patient care and employee satisfaction.
  • Utilizes a team approach when interacting with multidisciplinary teams and university affiliates.
  • Manages scholarship program by assisting applicants for successful submission of application packets and provides timely and accurate communication to the Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN) and national representatives.
  • Mentors recipients to successful completion of their programs and communicates for timely processing of payments.
  • Guides staff towards appropriate clinical areas for preceptorship.
  • Adheres to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice managing scholarship funds and regulated affiliation agreements.
  • Collaborates with leadership and unit managers to identify educational training needs for staff, while supporting activities that foster competence, critical thinking, and decision making.
  • Provides consultation and collaboration through the participation within organizational committees.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate data to determine outcomes and changes related to educational programs.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN), or Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission On Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Verification of accreditation may be obtained from http://www.acenursing.us/accreditedprograms/programsearch.htm or https://directory.ccnecommunity.org/reports/accprog.asp If your school has changed names, or is no longer in existence, you must provide this information in your application.
  • If your school was accredited by ACEN or CCNE at the time of graduation, but is no longer listed on the websites, you must provide documentation of accreditation with your application packet.
