About the Role

The incumbent serves as the Chief, Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS), Biloxi MS. GCVHCS is a two-division medical center with medical, surgical, psychiatric, and rehabilitation inpatients and a large outpatient program. The PSAS has offices in both Biloxi, MS and Pensacola, FL. The Chief, PSAS is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of assigned PSAS staff in both locations.

What You'll Do

  • Duties include, but not limited to: Advises health care professionals on procedures for providing prosthetic appliances and services to patients based on applicable VA policies, regulations, and Federal laws.
  • Authorizes the procurement of prosthetic and orthopedic appliances and their repair.
  • Authorizes appliance replacement and the issuance of spare appliance where no medical problems exist.
  • Provides assistance to the medical staff with prescription, acquisition, use, care, and replacement of various types of prosthetic and orthotic appliances and sensory aids.
  • Counsels and advises patients and their families regarding entitlement and eligibility for the use of prosthetic and sensory aids based upon a highly complex array of factors.
  • Visits Veterans who are unable to travel to facilities and counsels them and their families about prosthetic equipment and similar items, eligibility and entitlement under the laws and the use and care of prosthetic and orthopedic appliance.
  • Maintains liaison and oversight with manufacturers and dealers of prosthetic supplies, inspecting their facilities and services, and participating in the award of prosthetic appliance contracts.
  • Responsible for assigning, planning, setting priorities, and scheduling work of PSAS employees and advising, counseling, and instructing subordinates on work and administrative matters.
  • Interprets and applies laws, regulations, and procedures related to rendering prosthetic services as a necessary part of the VA medical care for which veteran patients are eligible.
  • Ensures PSAS Center staff completes mandatory annual training requirements and arranges for supplemental in-service training.
  • Serves as the facilitator and technical advisor to the Amputee Clinic Team, the Brace Clinic Team, the Wheelchair Clinic Team, HISA Committee, and Major Medical Committee.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.
