About the Role

This position serves as a Program Specialist for Medicine Service at the Birmingham, Alabama Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The position covers a very wide range and complex group of specialties requiring a collaborative effort with other large services within the medical center, such as Patient Care Services and Primary Care. The incumbent is responsible for managing and completing all analytical reports associated with Medicine Service and inpatient/outpatient areas.

What You'll Do

  • This program specialist position covers a wide range and complex group of specialties requiring a collaborative effort to work with other large services within the medical center such as Patient Care Services and Primary Care.
  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Managing and completing all analytical reports associated with Medicine Service.
  • This includes customer service reports, clinic workload and productivity, clinic profiles, waiting times, clinic access/utilization reviews, and quality improvement measures.
  • Manages the reviews of outpatient clinics and inpatient areas in accordance with established performance measures in the areas of QI and clinical care delivered with the goal of identifying strengths and weaknesses and developing plans of action for improvement.
  • Stays abreast of all procedures and changes to assigned reports based upon regular involvement in applicable meetings and conference calls at the medical center, VISN, and Central Office.
  • Monitors and manages the delivery and support of information technology (IT) Systems and services for Medicine Service.
  • This includes the establishment and troubleshooting of employee computer accounts, assignment of appropriate computer keys and menus, and the interfacing of clinical systems/equipment with VA systems.
  • Coordinates and manages activities related to workload accuracy and labor mapping.
  • Works closely with the section chiefs to ensure information is appropriately captured and staff members are appropriately trained.
  • Analyzes and evaluates, on a quantitative and qualitative basis, the effectiveness of programs or operations in meeting established goals and objectives.
  • Analyzes and prepares program status reports for review at all levels.
  • Develops sources of information, identifies and performs in-depth analyses of issues, analyzes the consequences of adopting various proposals and policies, develops guidelines, forecasts developments potentially affecting programs, develops options and alternatives, prepares and delivers written and oral presentations.
  • Serves as an expert in the program area, prepares analyses of the implications of significant developments and recommends program modifications.
  • Leads facility efforts and participates actively as a team member or sub-group leader on project teams involving participants or issues outside of the organization.
