About the Role

The Iowa City VAHCS is seeking a Full-Time, Primary Care Physician - Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder to join the Rehabilitation and Extended Care Service Line at the VAMC Iowa City IA. Note: This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT through November 9, 2026. The first referral cut-off is September 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST, with monthly cut-offs on the 1st. Applications received after each cut-off will be reviewed as needed until the position is filled.

  • Duties may include, but are not limited to: The Staff Physician, Spinal Cord Injury Service is responsible for care of Veterans with acute and chronic SCI in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment for clinical care of outpatients and inpatients, consultative services, providing education to patients, families and caregivers.
  • Participates in accreditation meetings or surveys as needed.
  • Support all VA and SCI/D Service policies and procedures.
  • May participate in Quality Management activities.
  • May be required to lecture or make presentations on SCI-related topics to other SCI staff or other services.
  • Perform specialty procedures as delineated in their clinical privileges.
  • This provider will also serve Veterans with limb loss, completing initial evaluations and providing ongoing follow up care.
  • SCI/D and amputee training must be completed in a timely manner after employment through our SCI/D Center in Minneapolis if not current and must be maintained according to the current relevant directive.
  • This physician will act as the SCI/D Spoke PACT and provide primary care and consultative services including inpatient consults throughout the facility for eligible Veterans with SCI/D.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation/examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
