About the Role

This position is located at the Eastern Kansas Health Care System (EKHCS) Leavenworth VA Medical Center and functions as a Journeyman Pipefitter within the Quick Response Team of the Facilities Management Service accomplishing trades and labor work and provides expert pipefitting services throughout the medical center, ensuring proper installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems integral to facility operations.

What You'll Do

  • This work extends to the appurtenant valves, traps, strainers, regulators, pumps, terminal fixtures, controls, and equipment that support facility operations such as heating, sterilizing, cleaning, and other steam-driven processes.
  • Major duties include but are not limited to: Plans, layout, and install various pipe sections, fittings, risers, and flexible branches at prescribed levels and inclines per mechanical drawings, sketches, specifications, building plans, blueprints, shop drawings, and on-site inspection.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, and replaces plumbing and piping systems; locates pipes behind walls, under floors, and above ceilings.
  • Measures, cuts, threads, and bends pipes.
  • Performs all aspects of plumbing and pipefitting including clearing clogged drain lines, installing and replacing toilets, sinks, faucets, water fountains, eyewash stations, water heaters, piping systems, fixtures, backflow prevention devices, and controls.
  • Operate grinders, pipe threading machines, oxygen/acetylene torches, hand tools, electric sewer augers, fans, pumps, welders, and other trade related tools and equipment.
  • Works off ladders, scaffolds, and man lifts when needed to reach work areas.
  • Supporting FMS management, engineering technicians, and project managers as the station pipefitting/plumbing journeyman through design consultation, code consideration, and installation guideline support of plumbing and piping systems as required by the Uniform Plumbing Code, Manufacture's installation guides, industry engineering standards, and the needs of Facility Management Service.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs problems with facility steam traps, heating control devices, thermostats, heating elements, radiators, convectors, and associated devices.
  • Performs shop benchwork such as prefabricating and rebuilding pressure reducing valve (PRV) stations, trap stations, pneumatic valves, steam and water coils.
  • Repairs, installs, and maintains pipe insulation on existing and newly installed or repaired pipes to include fiberglass, molded magnesium, cork, and rubber.
  • Operates hand and power tools: drain machines, Jetter's, pipe threaders, cutters, grinders, drills, flaring equipment, templates, plumb bobs, augers, pipe bending/threading tools, shop equipment.
  • Performs cutting/brazing/soldering/welding processes using gas torches, electric welding equipment (MIG/TIG/stick), and plasma cutters.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all types of steam fixtures, piping systems, backflow preventors, and conducts scheduled inspections per manufacturer and VA recommendations.
