About the Role

This position serves as a Pipefitter within the Maintenance and Operations section (M&O) of the Engineering Service, at Marion VA Medical Center, Marion, IL. Functions asa Journeyman Pipefitter supporting the clinical areas of the medical center including IntensiveCare Unit (ICU), Operating Room (OR), Community-Based Outreach Centers (CBOCs), Community Living Center (CLC), and Evansville Health Care Center.

What You'll Do

  • Major Duties Responsible for installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing varying pressure pipingsystems and equipment such as medical gas, vacuum systems, steam heating, steam generation,and hydraulic systems, steam generators, water tower, flash and expansion tanks, condensate,air, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • Inspects, tests, cleans, repairs, and replaces steam traps, condensate traps, and steam system filters.
  • Performs troubleshooting on failed ormis installed steam traps, repipes steam and condensate lines as needed, and ensures proper condensate removal to maintain safe and efficient steam distribution.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment.
  • Installs, modifies,and repairs pressure piping systems by routing piping through various structural materials including concrete, brick, drywall, plaster, steel, and wood.
  • Creates openings by drilling or cutting,installs hangers to ensure correct pitch and elevation, and installs system components such asrisers, flexible branches, drains, expansion joints, roof drains, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators.
  • Ensures all components are properly configured to support system pressure and maintain safe, efficient operation.
  • Work involves aspects of plumbing including installing,modifying, and repairing new and existing utility supply and disposal systems including air, sewage, water, oil, and gas lines, and related fixtures such as water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
  • Installs equipment by planning and routing system connections,positioning components at correct levels, and assembling, sealing, and testing systems to ensure proper pressure, leak-free joints, and reliable operation.
  • Accurately estimates material requirements and provides immediate supervisor with material list to be ordered.
  • Maintains a clean shop environment.
  • Returns work sites to orderly and safe conditions upon completing tasks.
  • Discards or stores all debris, trash, and materials appropriately.
  • Supports and assists Plumbers as required and escorts contractors when requested.
