About the Role

The Physician (Sleep Medicine) serves as a provider of Somnology related care for inpatients and ambulatory patients with Somnology conditions. Incumbent may be a Neurologist, Internal Medicine physician and/or Pulmonologist.will be responsible but is not limited to physical examination and treatment, coordination of medical care with other subspecialists, the cancer navigator, social worker, data manager, pharmacist, dietitian, nursing and other personnel as leader of a multidisciplinary team.

What You'll Do

  • Supervision shall include review of medical records, patient care, treatment, and consultation requests.
  • Ensures that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner.
  • Manage patients with Sleep Medicine related conditions such as but not limited to: acute and chronic respiratory failure, obstructive and restrictive airway disease, home oxygen dependency problems, the patient in shock of diverse origin, severe sepsis, obstructive sleep apnea, circadian rhythm misalignment and others.
  • Perform procedures related to the Sleep Medicine subspecialty such as but not limited to interpretation of sleep studies, prescription of oxygen therapy, positive airway pressure, evaluation of imaging studies, etc.
  • Active, dynamic and up-to-date participation in medical research related to respiratory/critical care medicine/ Somnology related conditions.
  • Participation in educational and scholar activities such as seminars, journal clubs, , grand rounds, tumor boards, treatment planning conferences and dissemination of acquired knowledge through peer reviewed publications.
  • Complies with VHA regulations and follows professional standards and ethical conduct.
  • Works to ensure that the VA Caribbean Healthcare System programs reflect the mission and priorities of the VHA.
  • At the same time, take an active participatory role as a leadership team member, providing counsel in defining and accomplishing the health system's mission and goals pertinent to their scope of practice.
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor.
  • The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
