About the Role
The Physician-Service Chief for the Specialty Care Department provides clinical, academic and administrative leadership for the Medical Service. This includes acute Medicine inpatients beds, Emergency Room, the Medical Subspecialty Sections (Cardiology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Renal, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, Pulmonary, Rheumatology), Internal medicine and Hospitalists teams, Neurology and Dermatology.
What You'll Do
- →Some positions/specialties are eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).
- →If selected, you will be notified if your specialty is eligible for EDRP or not.
- →You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
- →Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
- →VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.

- →Oversees inpatient care provided at the Acute Medical Service inpatients beds.
- →Oversees outpatient subspecialty clinics include scheduling and encounter credits.
- →Oversee Emergency Room operations.
- →Oversee telemedicine activities within the Service.
- →Oversee quality improvement activities, peer reviews, death reviews, and legal reviews.
- →Ensures that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner.
- →Promotes the development of health care professionals within their Service throughcounseling, mentoring, teaching and encouraging self-assessment.
- →Monitors and promotes compliance with VHA regulations and professional standards and ethical conduct.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- ✓Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.
