About the Role

Come Join Our Team! The Salem VA Medical Center located in Salem, Virginia is looking for a Pulmonary/Critical Care Physician to help care for our Veterans in Southwest Virginia. Incumbent will be board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, or some combination thereof that is acceptable to the administration, with a strong emphasis and preference placed on board certified Pulmonary/Critical Care physicians. Sleep certification is a plus.

What You'll Do

  • The incumbent provides initial medical assessment and evaluation of patients, which includes focused history, physical examinations, and acquiring pertinent diagnostic investigations.
  • Evaluates all new pulmonary consults, both inpatient and outpatient, with appropriate responses provided to the consulting party (including treatment plans, if applicable) within National, VISN, or facility guidelines.
  • Diagnosis and treatment within the scope of the Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care and/or Sleep Disorders specialty are required.
  • Telephonic contact is required for urgent or emergent situations.
  • Facilitates the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, Medical Center staff, and management.
  • Participates in the call rotation established for the section.
  • Engage in discussions of treatment plans with patients, family members, or other involved parties as appropriate, maintaining the requirements of COBRA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Exhibits leadership in suggesting and instituting changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from the medical literature.
  • Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS within prescribed timeframes.
  • Participates in the formal education of the residents, fellows and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc.
  • Participates in grading sessions for medical students, house staff and other trainees assigned to the Section; completes evaluations within expected timeframes.
  • Meets scholarly activity requirements, including peer-reviewed publication and national professional organization participation, as expected.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
