About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

What You'll Do

  • This position is located within Medical Service, at the Adam Benjamin Junior CBOC in Crown Point, Indiana as a member of the Primary Care and Ambulatory Care Service Lines and responsible for providing primary care for the veteran population in an outpatient setting.
  • The Primary Care Physician is a licensed independent provider who is responsible for the management of patients while following VA clinical guidelines with documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • You will work in a team setting with other physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and support staff assigned to perform duties to accomplish the treatment of our patients.
  • Computer skills are essential as the VA CBOC is fully computerized for note documentation, entering orders and requesting consults.
  • Specific duties include but are not limited to the following: Provides comprehensive care for Veterans for a panel size of approximately 1200 patients or serve walk-ins.
  • Willing to undergo specialized training for the care of Women Veterans preferred.
  • Perform initial histories and physical examination on outpatients using VVC technology and/or face-to-face visits Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients Screen outpatients to determine the need for further care.
  • Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice.
  • Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms.
  • Review need for and order health promotion and disease prevention measures.
  • Initiate response to and expediate request for consultations, special tests and studies.
  • Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Serve as an attending/teaching physician for internal medicine residents/students as assigned.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation/examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
