About the Role
The New Mexico VA Health Care System is seeking an Orthopedic Surgeon to join our dynamic Surgical Service team. The selectee will provide comprehensive orthopedic evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical care for Veterans with musculoskeletal conditions and injuries while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and supporting resident education through our academic affiliates.

- →Assures that a high degree of quality patient care is provided at all times. 2.
- →Independently exercises creativity in solving problems without direct supervisory guidance to meet the varying needs of patients while under care in the Orthopedic Clinic and Operating Room. 3.
- →Exercises independent professional judgment in diagnosing the full range of complex Orthopedic conditions as well as planning and executing the necessary treatment programs to meet complex and frequent changes in treatment objectives. 4.
- →Refers, when indicated, patients with multiple health problems to other providers within the facility and the VISN.
- →Consults with physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of their patients as it relates to emergent and traumatic conditions as well as Orthopedic manifestations of systemic conditions. 5.
- →Utilizes the general clinical privileges which include: ordering diagnostic tests as appropriate, writing prescriptions for medications or other items on the hospital formulary, hospitalize patients within the VISN as appropriate and discharge patients from outpatient care if it is determined that care is no longer required.
- →Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 0700-1530, on call duties, option of alternative work schedule
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- ✓Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
