About the Role
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
What You'll Do
- →Join a dedicated team within the Surgical Care Service at the Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS).
- →The Critical Care Surgeon routinely performs outpatient general surgery and inpatient critical care and general surgery patient care; determines diagnoses, and initiates treatments based on education, training and standards of care.

- →Position duties include but are not limited to the following: Diagnose and treat medical and surgical disorders using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care.
- →Responsible for initial evaluation and overall workups, history & physicals, and admission of general and subspecialty critical care patients as needed.
- →Clinical duties include but are not limited to Operating Room (experience in wide variety of standard general surgical procedures and operations including laparoscopy), in-patient rounds, Emergency Room and Outpatient Clinics.
- →Will be able to perform a wide variety of open surgical procedures.
- →Supervise residents from the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency Program and other training programs, as well as medical students from University of Arizona and Podiatry students and residents who rotate through the Critical Care rotation.
- →Participate in night call and perform emergency general surgical procedures to include night call for ICU patients.
- →Provide patients with education concerning their disease state and treatment regimen.
- →Complete all electronic, clinical, daily charting and documentation required by the Medical Center in a timely manner as appropriate, including outcomes reporting as appropriate.
- →Maintain clinical privileges as a member of the Medical Staff.
- →Other duties as assigned.
Requirements

- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
