About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • (Bill) Hefner Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking a staff Physician-Gastroenterologist for the Specialty Care section within Medicine Service at the Health Clinic in Kernersville, North Carolina.
  • The physician will establish and maintain professional relationships within Medicine Service, and with other services and facility management which result in improved patient care.
  • Duties include but are not limited to: I.
  • Administrative: Provides guidance and support to the nurse practitioners assigned to Medicine Service.
  • Participates in and attends medical center committees and/or teams as assigned.
  • Develops the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care Assesses veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills.
  • Academic: (Applies only to staff physicians assigned official teaching responsibilities) Participates in the formal education of the residents, fellows and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc.
  • Demonstrates and trains medical students/resident, fellows in medical procedures that are required to provide optimal patient care .
  • Assists in the development and implementation of education and training programs for medical students and fellows and residents, rotating through Medicine Service and accountable Clinical Services.
  • Research: Supports the medical center-wide research mission.
  • Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of patient care Encourages participation in clinical research among other staff members.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • VA has supported requests to USCIS for waiver of the 2-year home residency requirement that is typically required of J-1 visa holders.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
