About the Role
Pharmacy Technician (Outpatient) This position is located within the Central Virginia Health Care System. This position provides support to all pharmacy operations in a variety of settings requiring performance of duties with an understanding of the workflow, the pharmacy routine, and the responsibilities of the pharmacy program
What You'll Do
- →Pharmacy Technician (Outpatient) This includes patient care activities in the main outpatient dispensing pharmacy, phone center, outpatient clinic, administration area, or other area as assigned by the supervisor.
- →Performs all the duties of lower graded technicians if required.
- →The incumbent also is expected to accomplish all duties related to stocking, delivering, inventory, inspections, assembling ward orders, prescription assembly, controlled substances distribution, sterile compounding (including hazardous drugs), unit-dose drug packaging, dispensing, distribution, and any other function related to pharmaceutical practices.
- →The position includes independent judgement and team assignments as they relate to pharmacy services and the care of the Veteran.
- →The medical center offers a full range of outpatient medical care services.
- →These services include but are not limited to primary care, specialty care, geriatric care, emergency care, women's clinic, mental health, and many more FUNCTIONS OR SCOPES OF PRACTICE.
- →Subject to a final check by a pharmacist. 6) Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile).
- →This includes calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used subject to final check by a pharmacist.
- →Maintains quality control records for extemporaneously compounded products 7) Uses Automatic Dispensing machines (ADM) to batch and label medications.
- →Ensure ScriptTalk labels are batched if needed.
- →Understands when to use other prescription labels with computer outages. 8) Maintains highly sophisticated pharmacy equipment.
- →This includes cleaning procedures and maintenance of ADM's and other counting machines.
- →Troubleshoots equipment and databases when needed.
- →Must be knowledgeable of the contingency plan in case of automation failure.

- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
