About the Role

This is the full performance level for Pharmacy technicians. Employees at the full performance level may fill orders, dispense/deliver medications using automated systems or provide technical customer service to Veterans related to prescription needs. The primary duty will be providing pharmacy services and medication distribution to Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) patients and staff.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include but are not limited to: Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) Medication Management: Communicates to CBOCs via email/leaf portal regarding medication requests.
  • Reviews patient profiles to ensure active order(s) and provides medications/vaccines needed to a pharmacist for final check prior to dispensing.
  • Reviews OmniCell inventory reports for CBOCs and prepares medications/vaccines needed for pharmacist final check prior to dispensing.
  • Delivers medications via government vehicle to CBOCs via daily scheduled trips.
  • Performs monthly ward inspections for all CBOCs.
  • Provides reports to the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor.
  • Maintains active and valid drivers license and continuously meets VA criteria required to utilize a government vehicle.
  • Inpatient Medication Management: Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data electronically or via the Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order.
  • After a final check by a pharmacist, dispenses medication in a clinic, ambulatory care, dispensing window or discharge situations.
  • After prescription/order(s) are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and converts the order, if necessary, so that the item dispensed corresponds to the drug and dose ordered.
  • Prepares medications that require special handling and documentation.
  • Properly handles medications by ensuring high alert, hazardous, refrigerated and controlled substance medications are handled/stored appropriately and legally.
  • Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution.
  • Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
