About the Role
This registered nurse is directly responsible and accountable to the Surgical Service for all elements of the nursing process when providing patient care to a culturally diverse patient population. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, and customer satisfaction.
What You'll Do
- →Major duties include, but are not limited to: Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) Navigator is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients.
- →Provides patient management and care coordination throughout the pre-operative process and facilitates communication between the surgical team, pre-anesthesia team, and any consultants (medical specialists, social work, etc.) required to optimize the patient for surgery.
- →Assists Veterans, family members, and caregivers with receiving the most appropriate options and services to meet their complex perioperative health needs.
- →This includes, but is not limited to, acute, chronic, multiple, complex, catastrophic, or life-threatening illnesses; combat stress, residuals of traumatic brain injury; community adjustment; addictions and other health problems.
- →Coordinates care with multiple providers across all levels and sites of care.
- →Serves as the point of contact for the patient throughout the preoperative process.
- →Coordinates and expedites care from decision for surgery to treatment.
- →Provides patient centered coordination and communication of pre-operative testing and appointments.
- →Continuously assesses patients to identify resource needs, care goals and any critical factors required for achieving desired surgical outcomes.
- →Recognizes complex situations that impact patient care and intervene, using sound judgment, professional knowledge and initiating appropriate interdisciplinary referrals to resolve issues.
- →The Surgical RN Navigator demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.
- →Evaluates practice in an ongoing process, based on best evidence.
- →Provides peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement.
- →Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- ✓Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment evaluation.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
