About the Role

About the Position: This position is with Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in the Directorate of Nursing Same Day Surgery in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.

What You'll Do

  • Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Assess patients' physiological and psychosocial status to formulate a baseline plan of nursing care to include preparing goals and developing expected patient outcomes.
  • Initiate and carries out a variety of age-specific nursing assessments in preparation for surgery.
  • Confirm patient identity (using approved patient identifiers), verifies operative site, surgical procedure, ensures operative medical record is properly prepared, informed consent document is present, verifies NPO status and patient allergies.
  • Teach patients and significant others regarding surgical procedures and routines expected during the perioperative period.
  • Individualize each patient's treatment, reflecting developmental needs.
  • Document care using hard copy and automated documentation systems.
  • Identifies, documents, and implements nursing orders appropriate to patient care problems.
  • Observe and assess patient's condition; recognizes subtle changes and interprets its significance and criticality.
  • Evaluates and use judgment in selecting appropriate and necessary action and determine need for calling physician and provides specialized care until doctor arrives.
  • Administer oxygen, IV medication and fluid, blood and its derivatives, and other specialized therapy.
  • Performs bladder catheterizations, tracheal, nasopharyngeal, and endo-tracheal suctioning.
  • Serve as unit charge nurse assigning, directing, and coordinating nursing activities for all assigned personnel.
  • Assign staff to patient-to-patient care duties based on patient’s condition and experience of staff member.
