About the Role
The Oncology Nurse is accountable to the Nurse Manager of the Oncology/General Infusion clinic and is responsible for collaborating with other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve maximum quality, patient centered care, positive patient outcomes, and appropriate utilization of resources to a culturally diverse Veteran population.
What You'll Do
- →General Description of Assigned Duties: Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
- →Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
- →Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
- →Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
- →Uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems with measurable outcomes.
- →Completes physiological assessments and completes documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance to established policies and procedures.
- →Triages patient problems and assists in the evaluation of symptoms and initiate interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- →Monitors, tracks/tends, and reports ongoing care needs and outcomes to the interdisciplinary team.
- →They direct the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies, and providing quality improvement and outcome utilization.
- →They provide a safe working environment while administering, handling, and disposing of antineoplastic drugs and medical waste.
- →They oversee the administration and management of various medical procedures and treatments in the oncology setting, including vascular access devices and infusion treatments.
- →Conducts in-service education based on insights gained from oncology professional development activities and acquiring specialized skills in oncology-specific areas, including chemotherapy administration, oncology electronic ordering systems, and calculating drug dosages.
- →The Oncology/Hematology RN manages monitoring requirements for specific drugs, handling immediate infusion reactions, and preventing and managing oncology-related symptoms and adverse events, such as chemo-related symptoms and immune-related adverse events.
- →Follows established policies and guidelines for specimen collection, peripheral and central line maintenance, laboratory results, critical values/parameters, and follow-up protocols in collaboration with providers.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.

- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
