About the Role

The Non-Supervisory Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing operations of a nursing unit/patient care area. Fosters team development, ensures compliance with standards of clinical practice, and serves as a key liaison between staff and leadership. This position is 50% administrative and 50% direct patient care.

What You'll Do

  • Major Duties include, but are not limited to: Functions as a proficient clinician and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or overseeing direct patient care.
  • Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
  • Has responsibility and accountability for the direction and oversight of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance.
  • Functions as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader.
  • Drafts schedules and leave for final approval by the Nurse Manager.
  • Provides input into the performance of employees with the final evaluation completed by the Nurse Manager.
  • Assists with making recommendations for selection of candidates for employment.
  • Applies clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision making, and evaluating outcomes; providing feedback to the Nurse Manager who ultimately ensures nursing personnel provide timely nursing care that complies with generally accepted standards of practice.
  • Oversees work assignments and providing reports of contact or assisting with fact findings as needed to provide the Nurse Manager with the information necessary to make recommendations for counseling and/or disciplinary actions.
  • Equips staff with tools for competent care and promotes an environment accountability for high-quality, cost-effective outcomes.
  • Maintains knowledge and ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards, directives, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
