About the Role

The employee serves as a Medical Technician - Phlebotomist in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&MLS) at VA Minneapolis healthcare system, Minneapolis MN. The technician performs phlebotomy in inpatient, outpatient, and extended care areas of the hospital and associated clinics. The employee also performs a variety of computer, customer service, instruction, and communication tasks.

What You'll Do

  • ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** ***NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 1/24/2027).
  • This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year.
  • Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date.
  • The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. ***NOTE: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty.
  • A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance.
  • Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.
  • Duties for this position include but are not limited to: Specimen Collection: Uses proper patient identification and sample labeling.
  • Collects blood or urine specimens.
  • Ensures safe, non-traumatic processes are used to maintain patient safety and assures specimen quality.
  • Performs blood collection using venipunctures, and capillary finger sticks with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required repeat collection.
  • Ensures samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay.
  • Performs specimen collection in hospital rooms, extended care rooms, and out-patient specimen collection area.
  • Performs specimen collection under emergent situations such as cardiac arrest, stroke, critically ill, or noncooperative patients.
  • Follows standard operating procedures for guidance in specimen collection.
