About the Role

The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Reusable Medical Equipment Coordinator(RME) functions as a subject matter expert of the SPS and provides support for all matters of concern relating to procedures for the decontamination, high-level disinfection, and/or sterilization of critical and semi-critical reusable medical devices (RMD) and equipment storage of items reprocessed at Beckley VA Medical Center facility with management of RMD and single use (disposable) medical devices.

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional In this role, the RME Coordinator fully functions as a member of the SPS department and assists other members of the SPS department related to RMD.
  • Assigned tasks typically involve more complex tasks within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements at this level and assume more of a peer and mentorship role related to technical oversight of the SPS processes and interruption of guidelines and standards.
  • The RME Coordinator is responsible to the Chief of SPS for ensuring that the work assignments of the other employees of the team are carried out by performing a range of duties to ensure compliance of Instructions for Use (IFUs), SOPs for instruments and equipment and SPS educational requirements for employees are in place.
  • Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Is responsible for researching all manufacturers IFUs of all the reusable RMD of the facility to ensure compliance in reprocessing of RMD.
  • Creates and updates SPS SOPs for all RMD.
  • Instructs employees in specific tasks and techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies.
  • Mentors and provides preceptorship to existing employees related to job training of new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices.
  • Maintains quality metrics and quality assurance measures as required for tray assembly, tray inspection, workflow sequence, SOPs, sterilization methods and deadlines have been met.
  • Collects, receives, inspects, decontaminates, high-level disinfects and performs terminal sterilization of soiled supplies, instruments, equipment, and apparatus to include complex diagnostic equipment and medical apparatus.
  • Completely and thoroughly dissembles and positions all parts of RMD to ensure the removal of bioburden, proper cleaning, and disinfection prior to sterilization.
  • Performs leak tests on Endoscopes to ensure that the watertight integrity of the scope is intact before initiating the cleaning and high-level disinfection process or terminal sterilization.
  • Inspects, assembles, packages, high-level disinfects and sterilizes all instruments, instrument sets, and packs for use throughout the medical center.
  • Operates all sterilization that pertains to sterilization processes such as Steam Sterilizers, Sterrad, Sterrad NX, heat sealers, and incubators.
  • Performs high level disinfection according to manufacturer guidelines; documents and validates that chemicals are tested and meet requirements to ensure that disinfection has occurred.
