About the Role

This position is organizationally aligned within the Health Administration Service (HAS) under the Office of the Assistant Director at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, IL - level 1a VHA facility. This position serves as the Department Head of the Health Administration Service at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital. The HAS Department head assumes full responsibility for the efficient and uninterrupted operation of the department, the care of its patients, and the management of its personnel.

What You'll Do

  • Responsible for providing the influence and persuasion which fosters the acceptance and exercise of sound Medical Administration management concepts, practices and innovations.
  • Consults and participates with all members of top management in analyzing the broad implication of higher levels of authority, laws, regulations, policies, as well as professional and administrative trends.
  • Analyzes specific impact on Medical Administration and seeks solutions to existing and future problems identifying long and short term needs, formulates proposals for top management consideration, plans and initiates improvement actions.
  • Serves as sounding board and consultant to the Director for the resolution of Medical Administration problems that occur on a District basis.- Is involved in overall management consideration involving general administration manpower and other resources.
  • Has direct involvement in all program elements affecting the hospital mission, and helps formulate the advanced overall operation plan as well as serve on committees designed to facilitate top management decisions.
  • Is responsible for the effective accomplishment of the overall Medical Administration Program which is carried out through administration of professional and technical processes and programs.
  • Evaluates patient and public attitudes toward the hospital as reflected in patient administrative areas, identifies patient administrative policies and procedures with the public interest, executes a program of action and service to earn patient and public understanding and acceptance.
  • Operates under delegated authority and is responsible and accountable to the Director and Associate Director for providing leadership in the formulation and operation of the Medical Administrative Program.
  • Is a purchase card holder and performs daily approval of reconciliations within the mandated timeframes.- Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Quality/Productivity Goals Advises the Resources Director and hospital leadership on the minimum standards for quality and productivity, and the direction of program implementation while exercising contact and control of each division through subordinate leaders.
  • The incumbent develops, interprets, applies, and integrates objective criteria and acceptable standards for use in monitoring activities and conducts special studies to resolve administrative problems which arise in the course of normal operations, presenting conclusions and recommendations to the directorate leadership.
  • Direction/Long-Range Planning Coordinates the development of both long and short-range plans for HAS by assessing departmental needs based on constant communication with division leaders.
  • Anticipates and coordinates program needs of the department for incorporation into annual budget and operating plans.
  • Also develops flexibilities in operations and cost-effective approaches to ensure Veteran and incumbent satisfaction.
