About the Role

The The Medical Admin Officer Assistant (MAO) serves as the full Assistant to the Chief, Health Administration Service (HAS) and shares in the duties, responsibilities, and the authority of the Chief. The position is located within the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center (JHQVAMC). The JHQVAMC is classified as a Complexity Level 1c tertiary care and affiliated research facility which includes 118 operating beds, a 150 bed Domiciliary, and a 120 bed Community Living Center.

What You'll Do

  • The Medical Admin Officer Assistant (MAO) is given the widest range of responsibilities to include full authority to independently reach decisions and implement programs and assure that deadlines are met.
  • They have full delegated authority equal to the Chief in any managerial, programmatic, or administrative matters of the Business Office.
  • In this capacity, the MAO provides leadership to the Business Office staff members and has daily interactions with administrative and clinical services of the medical center.
  • Major duties include but not limited to: Provides orientation, enhancing career opportunities through training and development, job redesign and/or similar techniques, and assures full consideration of these employees in recommending promotions, awards and other forms of recognition.
  • Conducts interviews and recommends, selects, assigns and reviews work, approves and disapproves leave, evaluates performance and identifies training requirements and arranges for training.
  • Leads in developing internal policies and programs concerning such matters as equal opportunity, merit promotion, labor-management relations, position and resource management.
  • Assists with directing the management of the programs for the Business Office, performing and overseeing the full range of human resources and program requirements.
  • Ensures effective integration of efforts/activities with other medical center operations and with community-based agencies and activities.
  • Discusses, investigates, and responds to employee grievances and dissatisfactions in order to resolve conflicts.
  • Establishes and maintains good relations with various groups and organizations such as other hospitals, medical societies, medical schools and other colleges and universities, volunteer work groups, news media, and the community at large.
  • Upon request, informs practicing attorneys, private individuals, organizations, and representatives of local, state, and government agencies concerning the various legal and procedural problems, particularly in connection with patients' or potential patients' care.
  • Responsible for the interpretation and correct application of the various statutes enacted over a period of many years governing admission of patients in the various legal categories.
  • Determines the adequacy, according to law, of documents relating to admission, discharge, transfers and deaths.
  • Investigates, with thorough knowledge of the applicable laws and regulations, the non-medical aspects of patients' hospitalization, custody, discharge or death.
