About the Role

The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Coordinator supports the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at VA Montana by performing all aspects of reprocessing critical and semi-critical reusable medical devices, including decontamination, preparation, high-level disinfection, sterilization, and distribution. The role also provides education and workflow guidance, coordinates and prioritizes training with Lead Medical Supply Technicians (MST) and supervisors, and monitors staff readiness.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Follows established SOPs and manufacturer IFUs for all stages of Reusable Medical Device (RMD) reprocessing, including transportation, decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization/disinfection, distribution, and storage.
  • Operates ultrasonic cleaners, enzymatic dispensers, washer/disinfectors, steam sterilizers, H2O2 sterilizers and high-level disinfecting equipment.
  • Removes bioburden through appropriate cleaning methods; inspects instruments and packaging; assembles basic sets and trays for all service lines, including the Operating Room (OR); and ensures proper preparation of instruments prior to sterilization and distribution.
  • Transports sterile and contaminated RMD throughout the facility in accordance with transport regulations, maintains a clean work environment, reports equipment issues, and accepts assignments from senior staff.
  • Assists in orienting new MSTs and works collaboratively with SPS Leadership and team members.
  • Develops, monitors, and revises SPS training and education programs for all aspects of RMD reprocessing.
  • Identifies training needs, creating training plans, delivering instruction, and ensuring compliance with SOPs, manufacturer guidelines, VHA directives, and infection control requirements.
  • Designs instructional plans, evaluates learning outcomes, documents competency assessments, maintains current IFUs/competencies, and participates in tracking/trending educational data.
  • Programs are developed and updated for both new and existing employees to support consistent, standardized, and compliant practices within SPS.
