About the Position: As vessel dispatcher, is responsible for granting clearance to vessels requesting entry into and exit from the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Monitors vessels transit through the canal by radio and closed circuit TV systems, furnishing pilots and ship masters with information on conditions and traffic.
What You'll Do
- →Serve as marine traffic controller monitoring vessels transiting within Chesapeake and Delaware Canal waterway.
- →Direct all marine traffic, including permitting two-way traffic passing situations.
- →Monitor safety and integrity of government-owned marine traffic control equipment.
- →Receives radio messages from pilots or operators of vessels requesting passage through the canal.
- →Maintains traffic control sheet, recording pertinent data required such as time of canal entrance and passage of control points, dispatching actions, and any unusual or significant occurrences.
- →Maintains other data forms such as communication log, foreign vessel log, and log for recording 200 foot plus vessels.
- →Closing the canal due to adverse weather conditions such as fog is a judgmental decision made, in most situations, solely by the dispatcher.
