About the Role

You will serve as a Maintenance Workerwith US Fish and Wildlife Service.This WG-4749-08 position is located within the Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 7, Alaska Peninsula/Becharof National Wildlife Refuge in King Salmon, Alaska. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

What You'll Do

  • As a Maintenance Worker (WG-08) your duties may include but are not limited to the following: Building & Facility Maintenance: Maintain multiple buildings and housing units, including basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing tasks, boiler and heating systems, and routine repairs to keep facilities safe and operational-especially during Alaska winters.
  • Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance: Perform scheduled service on refuge vehicles and heavy equipment (oil changes, tire service, minor repairs).
  • Ensure all equipment is operational since local repair resources are limited.
  • Grounds & Small Engine Work: Maintain refuge grounds year-round: mowing, trimming, brush removal, snow removal, and operating equipment such as the motor grader to keep access roads and parking areas clear.
  • Safety, Inventory & Miscellaneous Duties: Conduct safety inspections, maintain fire alarms/extinguishers, manage chemical storage and safety data, track supplies, complete required paperwork, and support the refuge's safety program.
  • Physical Effort: The employee uses considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments.
  • The employee frequently is required to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools.
  • Work requires extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • The employee uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices.
  • Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places.
  • Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items.
  • Working Conditions: Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%).
  • Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery.

  • Must be a U.S.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • Probationary as a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest.
