About the Role

This position is located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in the Facilities Maintenance Division. This is a Career/Career-Conditional Full-time appointment. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

What You'll Do

  • The incumbent supervises all routine grounds and custodial maintenance activities in the Cades Cove District.
  • The incumbent is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of all grounds and custodial at Cades Cove Developed Area and loop road area, Cades Cove Campground and Picnic area, Anthony Creek Horse camp, Look Rock Campground and Picnic area, Abrams Creek Campground, Townsend Collections Center in Townsend Tennessee.
  • Different occupations supervised include: grounds work, janitorial, maintenance related to campground and picnic areas.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the appearance and upkeep of grounds around the structures, through mowing, trimming and brushing.
  • This includes 245 campsites, 132 picnic sites, and 127 acres of maintained landscapes.
  • The incumbent is expected to develop operation plans, preventative maintenance schedules, and funding justifications for operation needs and projects.
  • Incumbent develops plans and programs for the full range of responsibility for the Cades Cove district grounds and custodial operation to include budget, staffing, projects, etc.
  • From approved plans is responsible for the quantity and the quality of the work completed.
  • The incumbent is directly accountable to the Buildings and Grounds Branch Chief, GS-1640-12, for work progress and completion.
  • Is responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments by self and subordinates within general work schedules set by supervisor.
  • While working within accepted park practices, industry codes and NPS policy, has considerable latitude for independent action as assignments are of a general nature and the incumbent is expected to draw on experience and established standards to resolve issues as they arise or address unusual circumstances as they occur.
  • Guidance is received from the immediate supervisor, NPS manuals, policies, handbooks, directives, established building and trade codes, OSHA regulations, and park specific established procedures.
  • As a supervisor, incumbent is responsible for ensuring equal opportunity for all employees supervised in the selection of employees for training, promotions, awards and recognition, and other career development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
  • You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards.
  • A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to occasionally travel overnight away from home.
  • You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Contracting Officer's Representative Level 1 within 1 Year of Entrance on Duty.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. *Additional Requirements located under qualifications* There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
