About the Role

You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, located at the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. In this role, you will perform construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance work across buildings, facilities, vehicles, and heavy equipment to support refuge operations and land management. You will use a wide range of trades skills and tools to ensure safe, effective, and reliable operation of infrastructure essential to the mission.

What You'll Do

  • Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Perform building and facility maintenance by troubleshooting and repairing electrical, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, masonry, and heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain and repair vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engines by diagnosing issues, replacing parts, and completing preventive maintenance.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, graders, and loaders to support land management, road work, and construction projects.
  • Train and mentor employees and volunteers while ensuring safe work practices and proper use of tools, equipment, and protective gear.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and equipment records by updating logs and entering data into approved systems.

Requirements

  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Direct Deposit participation required.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
  • Must have or obtain, within twelve (12) months of appointment date, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and can couple/uncouple vehicles and connect/disconnect the air brakes and electrical lines.
  • Pre-employment and random alcohol and drug testing are required.
  • You will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive test is received.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicators License.
  • You are required to wear a uniform and comply with the uniform standards.
  • A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You are required to complete training, obtain and maintain a government credit card with travel and/or purchase authority.
