About the Role

The Maintenance Mechanic - Mover/Installer is a team member of the Move Crew, assigned to the maintenance and Repair Section of Facilities Management Service for the VA Portland Health Care System. The position is responsible for the pick-up, installation, storage and distribution of supplies and furnishings for the Medical Center.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include but are not limited to: Operates platform, van, stake, panel, flatbed, van, crew cab and pickup trucks as well as a forklift.
  • Transports and delivers supplies, furniture, linen, waste, and interior design furnishings.
  • Ensures supplies, linens, furniture/furnishings, and cargo are protected from the weather and is properly secured to prevent damage while in transit.
  • Assists in coordinating movement and delivery of furniture and other items.
  • Responsible for maintaining the furniture & supplies inventory in Facilities Maintenance Service Maintenance & Repair furniture storage warehouses, the issue and receipt of new furniture, supplies, equipment, and other required items.
  • Evaluates and determines which excess furniture will be reissued, refinished, or discarded.
  • Uses skilled techniques to construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute furniture for items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
  • Plans, assembles, and completes projects from layouts to final assembly.
  • Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently, and determines the layout and work sequences and types of related materials.
  • Lays, repairs, and installs counter tops and other similar items.
  • Assembles and repairs a wide variety of structural items such as wall standards, furniture frames, partitions, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and articulated arms.
  • Sets up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and tools.
  • Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.
  • Prepares surfaces and uses appropriate coating techniques in performing painting duties.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
